North Korea shifts into bicycle production

Forget the nuclear arms race. North Korea is entering the bicycle-making race.

Reuters reports that North Korea has built its first bicycle factory where it plans to produce 300,000 bicycles a year. Some 7 million bicycles are needed in the country, which is short on energy resources.

I was surprised to learn that up until now, most of those bikes used in Kim Jong-il's communist country have been made in China, proving that North Korea has more in common with the US than we imagined (BikeBiz reports 86% of bicycles sold in the US are Chinese imports).

The plant will produce “Peony Peak” models, named for one of the isolated nation's mountains, which is home of a nature preserve. The company, created with a 51% investment from China, will produce 50 models, including one for the national postal service.
