I've seen stories about people fleeing Hurricanes Katrina and Rita on bicycles; this is the first about someone cycling toward the stricken areas.
Helen Roberts is bicycling from Aspen, Colorado, to Baton Rouge to raise money for the hurricane victims and volunteer with the Red Cross. The 43-year-old cyclist embarked recently on her Cannondale pulling a Burley trailer loaded with gear.
Actually, a partner helped pull that 50-pound trailer to the top of 12,000-foot Independence Pass before she set off on her own, Roberts wrote on her website, theheartride.org.
Her most recent dispatch puts her 220 miles into her journey in Pueblo. Next she heads into western Kansas and the panhandle of Oklahoma. She writes:
“It is just me, my bike and my trailer, and I couldn't feel freer. It is bliss.”
Roberts collected $2,000 before leaving and hopes to raise more during the ride, according to the Aspen Times (registration required).
The Heart Ride website tells how to donate to the project.
