Seattle bike ride to raise funds for hurricane disaster relief

The Northwest's largest bicycle club has decided to donate all the proceeds from this upcoming Sunday's Cascade Spawning Cycle to the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Disasater Relief Fund.

I believe this is the second year for the Cascade Bicycle Club's spawning cycle bike tour that features four bike loops around Seattle on Sunday, Sept. 18. The distances range from 4 miles for the “Family Fry” route to 44 miles for the “Copper River Special.” All start and finish at Seattle's Myrtle Edwards Park

Chuck Ayers, executive director of the Cascade Club, sent out an email alert last week saying the board and staff thought they should do what they can to help those suffering from the tragedy in the Southeast. That's why Sunday's Cascade Spawning Cycle became the Hurricane Katrina Big Easy Benefit. In a press release issued Monday, Ayers said:

“Normally the money raised from our rides supports our cycling education and advocacy work. But some things — like helping provide basic necessities for people in an emergency — are just more important sometimes.”

Cascade also is throwing a New Orleans-style post ride party at Myrtle Edwards Park with Cajun music and Krispy Kreme Donuts, as well as Ballard Brothers Famous Cajun Salmon burgers for sale.

Participants can register online through Wednesday, Sept. 14, or just show up at Myrtle Edwards Park with cash or a credit card before 10:30 on Sunday morning.
