Tuesday's 143-mile stage of the Vuelta a Espana bicyce race boiled down to this:

The Fassa Bortolo team delivers cyclist Alessandro Petacchi to the vicinity of the finish line. Petacchi outlasts rival sprinters Thor Hushovd (Credit Agricole) and Erik Zabel (T-Mobile) to win the stage.

Four stages into the three-week bicycle race across Spain, and Petacchi already has two stage wins. The Italian cyclist has 14 Vuelta wins in his career.

Overall, Aussie Brad McGee (Francaise des Jeux) still holds the leader's gold jersey for the third day. See CyclingNews for more race results.

The stage from Ciudad Real to Argamasilla de Alba is the longest of the Vuelta. Other than the sprint finish, it was marked by a crash about 53 miles from the finish, but no one appeared to be hurt. Also, a small group of cyclists broke away about 10 miles into the race, and three of them stayed out front until about 12 miles from the finish.

On Wednesday the bicycle race covers about 110 miles from Alcazar de San Juan to Cuenca. Mostly flat, if features a couple of small climbs near the end.
