Francaise des Jeux cyclist Brad McGee lost the 2nd stage of the Vuelta a Espana on Sunday but took the gold leader's jersey.
The Australian cyclist finished just behind stage winner Leonardo Bertagnolli (Italy, Cofidis) in the hot, mostly downhill 117-mile bicycle race route from Granada to Cordoba.
McGee and Bertagnolli closed together toward the finish in Cordoba, but McGee chose to lead out Bertagnolli for the win instead of playing cat and mouse and risk being caught by a chase group that included Juan Antonio Flecha (Fassa Bortolo).
McGee took the gold jersey from Russian cyclist Denis Menchov, who won the 4.5-mile Stage 1 time trial for Rabobank on Saturday.
The top US cyclist is Tom Danielson, Discovery Channel, who sits in 11th place overall, 1-minute-7 behind McGee. Three time Vuelta winner Roberto Heras is in 12th place. Other race details and results are at CyclingNews.
Monday's Vuelta a Espana is a slightly climbing 95-mile route from Cordoba to Puertollano.
