Jan Ullrich won the 18.6-mile individual time trial in the Tour of Germany bicycle race on Monday, but he couldn't make up the 1-minute and 26-second margin of US cyclist Levi Leipheimer to take the overall lead.

With one day left in the 9 stage tour, Leipheimer has a 31-second edge on Ullrich, who now sits in second overall. The American bicyclist on Gerolsteiner finished in third in the time trial behind another American, Bobby Julich (Team CSC).

Ullrich finished third in the Tour de France, moving into the position after turning in a strong individual time trial on the penultimate day in Saint Etienne. With the Tour behind him, T-Mobile's Ullrich said he would hold nothing back to win the Germany tour.

Lately in his diary, Ullrich's been complaining about the weather:

“The conditions are really atrocious this year. I have never experienced such a rain soaked cycling tour. … The rain has been leaving me feeling a bit sluggish.”

Leipheimer, 31,  took the overall lead when he won the steep mountain stage on Thursday. He finished sixth in the Tour de France this year.
