Bicycles painted a ghoulish white are appearing around Seattle to mark locations of car-bike accidents.
The displays are the work of the GhostCycle bike accident awareness project. The activists want to draw attention to particularly hazardous locations where bike accidents happen.
The group collected data on bicycle accidents from cyclists at its GhostCycle.com website for about three months. Then it took 40 bicycles, painted them white, and placed them at locations around town.
Each of the bicycles sports a sign — “A Cyclist Was Struck Here” — and a number and the address to the website. Anyone can check the number at the website and learn about the particulars of the accident. The location of 140 accidents are marked on a map of Seattle.
Noting on its website that Seattle is one of the nation's most bike-friendly cities, the website says that “things can always improve.” The Seattle Times reports that 300 bike-car accidents are reported every year, and 1-3 cyclists die in accidents every year.
Some statistics from data collected by GhostCycle:
1 in 5 accidents involving another vehicle were hit and run;
74% involved physical injury
34% of the accidents were reported to the authorities
The GhostCycle.org website is still collecting data on bike accidents at its website.
