2008 schedule for Bicycle Saturdays and Sundays in Seattle

It's OK to ride your bicycle out in the middle of the road when it's Bicycle Saturdays or Sundays on Lake Washington Boulevard in Seattle.

The city bans cars from a 4-mile stretch of the lakeside road between Mount Baker Beach and Seward Park on occasional weekend days throughout the summer. The first closure was Sunday. It rained all morning and looked like it might rain the rest of the day. When I rode down there in the afternoon, only a few folks were out.

Closing that section of Lake Washington Blvd. makes for an fairly traffic-free 25-mile loop around the southern half of Lake Washington. The only rough spot is along Rainier Avenue in Seattle. You can piece it together by checking out the online King County Bicycling Guide.

The road is closed to motorized vehicles from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the following days: Saturday, May 21; Saturday, June 11; Sunday, June 19; Saturday, July 9; Sunday, July 17; Saturday, Aug. 13; Sunday, Aug. 21; Saturday, Sept. 10; and Sunday, Sept. 18.

Seward Park is usually a bicycling hub on those days, with helmet-fitting booths, other exhibits and snacks. The road closures are sponsored by Group Health Cooperative.
