The day after completing his 2,400-mile “trip of a lifetime,” bicyclist Broc Bebout died on the way home in a van.

The Indiana cyclist and about 20 friends completed their five-week southern tier journey from Carlsbad, California, to Brunswick, Georgia, on Wednesday last week.

His wife told The Star Press that her husband had a great time. “It was the trip of a lifetime. We all have a list of things we like to say we did. That was right up there at the top.”

The newspaper reports that the 57-year-old retired engineer had undergone quadruple bypass surgery at age 39. Bebout competed in running races up to that time, then he switched to bicycling for exercise and improved his eating habits. His wife credits bicycling for his nearly 20 years of good health after the surgery.

After completing the cross-country ride, the cyclists went out for a celebratory dinner at a Brunswick steak house. The next day, Bebout died as the van was passing through Tennessee on group's way back to Indiana.

Bebout was an officer in his hometown bike club, the Anderson Spoke and Wheel Bicycle Club, whose motto is: “You'll never ride alone and never be left behind.”

Club members are getting together Wednesday (May 4) evening at Bickel's Banquet and Catering in his memory.
