In a bicycle race that American Lance Armstrong was expected to dominate, it was three other US riders who took the podium in the Tour de Georgia.
After Sunday's 125-mile stage, the Tour de Georgia podium was populated by three Americans, Tom Danielson (Discovery) who finished first overall, Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner) second, and Floyd Landis (Phonak) third.
Danielson had captured the yellow jersey from Landis on the grueling ride to Brasstown Bald on Saturday.
Tom Danielson, 27, a resident of Durango, Colorado, was picked for Armstrong's new Discovery Channel Pro Cycling team after serving his first year in Euro racing with Fasso Bortolo. He's known for his hill-climbing abilities (as evidenced in his strong finish on Brasstown), having broken a 10-year-old record on the Mt. Evans Hillclimb in Colorado.
Danielson concentrated on off-road racing in his early career, switching to road bikes in late 2001. His hometown newspaper, the Durango Herald, has an interesting story on this rising star.
