Bicycle education, not legislation, on Washington island

We're free to ride our bicycles on Mercer Island as we always have, as long as it's within the current laws.

The Seattle Times reports that City Council has decided not to impose new restrictions on cyclists riding across the island or around its scenic loop road that overlooks Lake Washington.

Several options were on the table Monday night after Mercer Island motorists complained that bicyclists slowed them down on narrow roads and pedestrians said they were startled by cyclists whipping along the bike-hike path. Originally, council members had suggested requiring large groups to register at City Hall and banning cyclists from portions of the bike-hike trail that follows I-90 over the bridges and across the island.

Instead, the city is going to try to encourage cyclists, pedestrians and motorists to share the roads and trails safely. They also called for making roadside improvements and enforcing existing laws. They plan to revisit the issue in six months.

Currently, cyclists are allowed to ride two abreast, unless otherwise noted.
