Bicycle tour repeat: 38 years later

A 62-year-old cyclist from Kentucky is embarking on a cross-country bicycle trek this summer to teach kids a lesson.

Joe Bowen says his indirect route from California back to eastern Kentucky will cover more than 14,000 miles. Not just a pleasure tour — like his first transAmerica ride in 1967, Bowen will be posting weekly journals, pictures and videos to more than 1,000 students in Kentucky.

“Geography, history, culture, literature — it's everything there is about America and it's real,” he told the Shelbyville, Kentucky, Sentinel-News.

The Appalachian Heritage Alliance is helping to pay for the trip, named Unbridled Spirit Rediscover America Bicycle Trip. In addition to sharing his experiences with students, he'll be touting Kentucky's nationally designated Wild and Scenic Red River and National Scenic Red River Gorge Byway.

Bowen begins his bicycle tour April 8. It will end about a year later. His weekly journals will be found at the Appalachian Heritage Alliance website. Also, check for on-the-road blogs by Bowen, his partner, and other cross-country bicyclists.

Here's a March 13, 2005, piece from the Lexinton Herald-Leader about Bowen's bicycle tour.
