Some 2,000 Spyre and Spyre SLC brand dual piston mechanical disc brake calipers are the target of a recall by Utah-based Tektro USA/TRP and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Riders who own bicycles equipped with the faulty calipers are warned to stop using their bikes and contact the shop where they purchased them or Tektro USA/TRP for an improved replacement.
The company and CPSC launched the recall after receiving a report of a brake failure due to the calipers. The calipers fail when the actuator arm over rotates and dislocates other parts.
The Spyre and Spyre SLC brand were sold as aftermarket parts as well as original equipment one bikes made by BTI, Diamond Back Bicycles, Giant Bicycles, Hans Johnson Co (HJC), Kona, Marin Bikes, Quality Bicycle Products, Raleigh America.
They were sold between April and December 2013 for $90 to $110.
