Carbon handlebar stem

About 100 4ZA Threadless Carbon Bicycle Handlebar Stems are being recalled because they can break.

The black carbon handlebar stems are made in Taiwan by Belgium-based Race Productions NV. One person was injured because of breakage, reports the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The stems were sold at specialty bicycle stores and websites from January 2005 through April 2010 for about $59 each.

The 4ZA stems were sold as aftermarket components; the words “4ZA Cycling Performance” is painted on the extension between the steerer clamp and handlebar clamp. The extension lengths range from 3 1/2 to 5 inches.

The consumer commission urges owners to stop riding the bicycles immediately and either take it back to the shop where it was purchased or having a bike shop contact the manufacturer’s current distributor — Quality Bicycle Products
